Rhythm Tap is the original vernacular dance of the 1920s - 1950s of America. Anyone who wanted to become a star had to learn some kind of a dance, and it was usually tap dancing. It was later on that lyrical jazz came to the fore, before that, it was all tap. Today there are many styles of tap, but the style I really love, is what is known (in a rather oxymoron way) rhythm tap, or close to the floor rhythm. The style of tap which I find least affinity with, is syllabus tap, such as CSTD or ISTD.
Having done Lindy Hop before coming to tap, I find myself very attracted to the great tap acts of the past, such as the Nicholas Brothers, Stump and Stumpy, Chuck Green, Bill Robinson and the hoofers which came out of that generation, such as Bunny Briggs and Jimmy Slyde. |
